Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind: 16 Essential Characteristics for Success

Course Overview

The Habits of Mind, as part of the Dimensions of Learning and our district’s Instructional Framework, identify the productive mental habits that, along with attitudes and perceptions, form the backdrop of the learning process (Marzano and Pickering, 1997).Using Art Costa and Bena Kallick’s new book, Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind (2008), you will learn about how the 16 Habits of Mind help students and teachers successfully engage in active learning throughout their school experience. The goal for participants in this book study is to gain a stronger understanding of these habits and how they are translated into action. As a result, we will focus on the development of lessons specifically designed to teach Habits of Mind in addition to ways they may be infused into our classrooms and school on a day-to-day basis.Additional resources identified through this book study will be utilized to help facilitate our learning and provide ideas to spark our creativity.
